- Prof. Yeonjoo Kim’s research group, Unrevealing carbon response of tundra ecosystems to advancing greenup and snowmelt in Alaska Prof. Yeonjoo Kim’s research group at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering investigated carbon response of tundra ecosystems to advancing greenup and snowmelt in Alaska. The ongoing disproportionate increases in temperature and precipitation over the Arctic region may greatly alter the latitudinal gradients in greenup and snowmelt timings as well as associated carbon dynamics of tundra ecosystems. In this study, Prof. Kim‘s research group used remotely-sensed and ground-based datasets and model results embedding snowmelt timing in phenology at seven tundra flux tower sites in Alaska. This study showed that the carbon response to early greenup or delayed snowmelt varies greatly depending upon local climatic limits. Given the high likelihood of more frequent delayed snowmelt at higher latitudes, this study highlights the importance of understanding the role of snowmelt timing in vegetation growth and terrestrial carbon cycles across warming Arctic ecosystems. This study was funded by grants from the Korea Polar Research Institute and the National Research Foundation of Korea. This study was published online in Nature Communications on Nov. 25th,2021. - Prof. Kim Two papers on organic waste recycle are selected as 2020 Top 1% FWCI papers
- Two papers were selected as Top 1% FWCI papers in 2020, which were written by Sang-Hyoun Kim, an associate professor in the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering,. “Microbial strategies for bio-transforming food waste into resources” reviewed state-of-art knowledge about various sources of food waste generation, their utilization, and valorization by exploiting microorganisms. “Conversion of waste cooking oil into biodiesel using heterogenous catalyst derived from cork biochar” showed transesterification of waste cooking oil using a heterogeneous catalyst prepared by pyrolysis of waste cork. Both papers were published in Bioresource Technology (IF: 9.642). Prof. Kim has investigated organic waste recycle to fuel and chemicals such as H2, CH4, bioplastic, and biodiesel and has published more than 200 SCIE papers with Scopus h-index 45.

- Prof. Jang-Ho Kim, developed carbon polymer corrosion ZERO rebar substitute technology (Ministry of Land, Infrastructure
- Professor Jang-ho Kim signed a project with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, which is worth 18.728 billion won (about 18.7 billion won). The project name is “Development of carbon polymer corrosion ZERO rebar substitute technology,” and the final goal of this project is to develop and construct corrosion-free rebar substitute for construction using carbon fiber reinforced composite (CFRP) for non-corrosion, high strength and light weight of construction members. It aims to develop technology for practical use in manufacturing, analysis, design, construction, and real structure application of rebar substitutes-concrete members for the expansion of industrial application. Professor Jangho Kim's Concrete Structural Engineering Lab conducted this project and presented the following research results. 1. Development of CFRP Rod and Grid for non-corrosive construction to replace rebar, which is a corrosive material 2. Reduction of maintenance cost through ZERO corrosion and lightening of members through high strength 3. Leading the new material market in the construction field by developing a new material, CFRP

- Professor Jun Heo signs MOU with construction big data startup Cornworth Kolon Global
- Kolon Global Co., Ltd. signed a business agreement with Conworth, a construction site big data solution startup, for 'utilization of digital twin integrated construction site data platform technology'. Digital transformation is accelerating, and the ability to utilize big data produced in the construction process is expected to determine the future of construction companies." and "To lead this future, 'big data optimized for data characteristics of construction sites' We have signed a technical cooperation business agreement with Conworth, which has 'solutions'.” Through this agreement, the two companies will use Boston Dynamics' four-legged robot 'Spot' to collect various 3D big data (3D design (BIM), Internet of Things (IoT), 360-degree photos, and construction material volume) of construction sites. It was decided to jointly develop future big data solution technology by interlocking it, and it is expected that this will improve the stability of the construction site, improve quality and increase productivity. Professor Heo Jun announced, “Through a technical cooperation business agreement with Kolon Global, we will establish a data acquisition, storage, management, analysis, and application platform optimized for the construction site, and through this, we will set a new milestone in innovation in the construction industry.” It announced a plan to advance into the overseas market of smart construction worth 20 trillion won through big data platform technology.
