What is Computational Science & Engineering?
The Computational Science & Engineering (CSE) department at Yonsei is one of the most prestigious graduate education centers in computational and mathematical engineering. Our mission is to become a predominant graduate education center department addressing the pressing need for research and education in a rapidly growing mathematics-based multidisciplinary area with connections to applied mathematics, computational fluid dynamics, computational electrical and mechanical engineering, and computer science. CSE is widely accepted as a crucial third mode of scientific investigation and engineering design. CSE attracted a stream of internationally-recognized applied mathematicians, computational engineers, and scientists.

HISTORY & FUTURE
The Department of Computational Science & Engineering (CSE) was set up on the Yonsei campus in 2009 under full sponsorship of the World Class University project by the Korean government. We pursue excellence in CSE education, research, innovation, and creating and imparting knowledge for improving society. We have to assemble in the department a diverse group of faculty who not only have excellent, well-developed research programs of their own, but also interact with other faculty members in a synergistic manner so that advances in CSE can influence advances in several traditional disciplines.

A Message from the Chair of CSE
Our Department of Computational Science and Engineering is dedicated to computation-oriented multidisciplinary research that fuses the knowledge and techniques of engineering fields with those of computational and applied mathematics, while fostering the next generation of computational engineers and scientists well-equipped with theory and practice.
Our department was founded in Fall of 2009 due to a great demand for such multidisciplinary research and education with the support by the National Research Foundation of Korea through the World Class University Program. Our program was initiated by the former chair, Prof. Jin Keun Seo and 5 faculty members from the mathematics and engineering departments in Yonsei University, and later joined by 6 eminent foreign scholars. Among the foreign scholars, three currently hold adjunct professorships: Prof. Max Gunzburger of Florida State University, Prof. Carsten Carstensen of Humboldt University in Germany, and Prof. Dongbin Xiu of Purdue University. Among the many research subjects being carried out in our program, our research groups focus on numerical methodologies and tools, computational fluid dynamics / environmental engineering, and bio-medical engineering applications. Our program is one of only two programs of this kind in Korea although there are over 10 similar programs in the United States and Japan. The Institute for Computational and Mathematical Engineering of Stanford University and The Applied and Computational Mathematics Program of Princeton University are good examples. Our program also sponsors international collaboration through joint research and student exchange as well as industrial collaborations with various companies such as Samsung Medison and Boolt Simulation.
Besides the regular course program, we offer an internship program for undergraduate students from all fields of science and engineering who lack prior knowledge on computational science and engineering. Summer camps or winter schools are frequently offered to new students and interns as well. Our graduate students have been active participants in the Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics Conference, American Physical Society Meeting, the Korean Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics Conference, and the Korean Society of Computational Science and Engineering Conference.
We are proudly attracting outstanding graduate and undergraduate students who have a strong will to learn computation-oriented engineering and mathematics and to cultivate world-class expertise in this area. We also invite you to our Open Labs, regularly held in March and September, where you can enjoy poster presentations by graduate students in our department as well as a warm welcome from all faculty, staff, and students in addition to our state-of-the-art facilities at the beautiful Yonsei Shinchon campus.
