This course aims at Python programming for scientific computations by introducing the NumPy package for numerical computing, the SciPy toolbox for various scientific computing tasks, and the Matplotlib package for visualization. The course focuses on Python programming of basic numerical algorithms such as interpolation, integration, differentiation, ODE and PDE solvers, and basic linear algebra.
CSE5103 DATA-DRIVEN SIMULATION OF MEDICAL ULTRASOUND [데이터주도의료초음파시뮬레이션]
본 과목에서는 실제 의료상황에서 초음파 전달로 인한 체내의 음압장을 해석하는 시뮬레이션하는 방법을 학습한다. 이 과정에서 초반부에서는 물리 기반 시뮬레이션 방법으로 파동전달에 대한 이론적 기초, 유한차분법 기반의 파동전 달 해석, 의료영상 데이터 기반 생체재료 모델링, 가속해석을 위한 GPU 병렬해석에 대한 내용을 배우며 동시에 MATLAB과 C를 이용한 컴퓨터 프로그래밍을 함께 진행한다. 이후에는 물리 기반 시뮬레이션을 통해 데이터를 획득 하고, 획득한 데이터를 통해 다양한 데이터 기반 네트워크 모델을 학습한다.
CSE5820 BASICS OF FINITE ELEMENT METHODS [기초유한요소법]
The finite element method is a useful tool to find an approximation of the solution to given partial differential equations in an arbitrary domain. The subject includes the introduction to the basic theories of finite element method, the implementation of finite element method and applications to partial differential equations in finite element method. This course aims to solve partial differential equations by implementing one's own codes using finite element method and get used to using known packages.
CSE5851 DEEP LEARNING AND DATA SCIENCE [딥러닝과데이터과학]
Broad fields of machine learning, including deep learning, and data analytics have attracted a great deal of attention by virtue of not only a huge amount of available datasets but also the emergence of GPUs. This class aims at an introduction to several fundamental data mining problems based on machine learning/deep learning tools. More specifically, for the first half of the semester, this class covers data representation learning (a.k.a. feature learning) along with understanding of principles, algorithm design, and implementation, where each of three representation learning algorithms such as random-walk-based approaches and proximity-based approaches is explored on a weekly basis. For the second half of the semester, this class deals with the following two crucial problems in statistical machine learning: 1) clustering and 2) sampling. Commonly-applicable methods such as K-means, Gaussian mixture models, spectral clustering, and density-based clustering are presented in clustering. Several sampling techniques such as Gibbs sampling and Markov Chain Monte-Carlo (MCMC) as well as Bayesian modeling are also presented along with motivating examples.
CSE6126 PARALLEL SCINENTIFIC COMPUTING [병렬과학계산]
The major goal of this course is to develop parallel solvers for typical Partial Differential Equations (PDE) in science and engineering. We review numerical methods for the PDE including DDM and develop serial programs based on iterative methods for solving the PDEs. Next, we develop parallel algorithms based on OpenMP and MPI programming.

CSE5023 Fundamentals of Neural Networks and Reinforcement Learning [신경망과강화학습기초]
This class aims at introducing not only basic principles of both neural networks in general and reinforcement learning but also their implementations and applications. This class is a course jointly established with POSTECH and Yonsei. The first half deals with neural networks and representation learning, and the second half deals with basics of reinforcement learning. Specifically, in the first half, this class covers an introduction to neural network models, basics of natural language processing via the word2vec model, an introduction to graph learing alongside repsentation learning of graphs; in the second half, it covers various reinforcement learning methods such as multi-armed bandits, finite Markov decision processes, dynamic programming, Monte Carlo methods, and temporal-difference learning. Students are expected to gain comprehensive thinking abilities, balancing between theory and practice, through periodic assignments.

The objective of this course is to teach the fundamentals of finite element analysis of linear/nonlinear problems in solids and structures. This course includes the theoretical foundations and appropriate use of finite element methods. Specially, the computer programming of finite element procedures will be taught. The methods studied in this course would be practical procedures that are employed extensively in the mechanical, civil and aeronautical industries.
CSE5850 Algorithms and Their Applications [알고리즘과응용]
The remarkable and rapid development of artificial intelligence and machine learning technology has illuminated the importance of algorithms again. Although the collection and processing of big data has become tractable and high-speed computing has become possible by virtue of the emergence of GPUs, a more fundamental understanding of algorithms and the design of efficient algorithms would be essential in maximizing the computing performance. In this course, basic algorithms such as divide-and-conquer, dynamic programming, and greedy algorithms are presented. These basic algorithms are explored in various fields including machine learning in general. From this course, students are expected to be able to develop comprehensive analysis ability and insights to predict the computational complexity and memory usage of a given program before real implementation, which is regarded as a vital skill to be cultivated by data analysts and algorithm designers. In addition, it would be possible to solve such problems that cannot be solved by the current GPU-based high-speed computation, if one is capable of designing a revolutionary algorithm (e.g., improvement from quadratic time to logarithmic time). Finally, students will learn how to define and formulate a new challenging problem.
CSE6129 Introduction to Uncertainty Quantification [불확실성정량화방법론]
The major goal of this course is to introduce the fundamentals of uncertainty quantification to graduate students with research interests in the field of predictive modeling. We review basic probability, statistics and approximation theory as the preliminary knowledge of UQ. This course includes numerical methods for the UQ propagation and the post-processing of UQ. Finally, we define, propagate and infer uncertainty in a real problem using UQ techniques.

CSE7850 Stochastic Methods [스토케스틱 수치해법]
This course is to focus on fundamental aspects of numerical methods for stochastic computations. We consider a class of numerical methods including generalized polynomial chaos (gPC). Designed to simulate complex systems subject to random inputs, these methods are widely used in many areas of computer science and engineering. In this course we introduce polynomial approximation theory and probability theory; describes the basic theory of gPC methods through numerical examples and rigorous development; details the procedure for converting stochastic equations into deterministic ones; using both the Galerkin and collocation approaches; and discusses the distinct differences and challenges arising from high-dimensional problems. The last section is devoted to the application of gPC methods to critical areas such as inverse problems and data assimilation. Prerequisites: Numerical Analysis, PDE for Science and Engineering
CSE7880 Particle-Laden Flows [입자와 유동]
This course is to study various numerical methods for convection dominated diffusion equations. Mathematical models that involve a combination of convective and diffusive processes are among the most widespread in all of science and engineering. Following topics will be discussed: finite difference method, finite element method, finite volume method, stability, streamline diffusion methods, discontinuous Galerkin methods, variational multiscale method.
CSE7890 Numerical Optimization [수치최적화]
This course covers numerical optimization. We will concentrate on convex optimization. For such purpose we will briefly cover the convex theory including convex set, convex function, sublevel set, epigraph, separating hyper-plane theorem, conjugate function, etc. Concerning duality, we will study Lagrange dual function, weak and strong duality, Karush-Khun-Tucker (KKT) conditions. For unconstrained optimization, we study algorithm including descent method, line search method, Newton’s method, for constrained optimization, Newton method will be covered for equality constraint problems and interior point methods including barrier method and primal dual method for inequality constraint problems. After that we will consider applications, approximation and fitting, l1 minimization, for examples. CSE8820 Advanced Finite Element Method [고급유한요소법]
This course is to study advanced topics in finite element methods. The methods under consideration include standard Galerkin methods, Adaptive FEMs, Nonstandard finite element methods, Mixed FEMs, and discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods. Applications will include Darcy equations, Stokes equations, and linearized Navier-Stokes known as Oseen equations.

CSE5970 Medical Imaging System: Physical Principles and Applications [의료영상시스템의 원리와 응용]
This lecture presents a comprehensive introduction and overview of electromagnetic tissue property imaging techniques using MRI focusing on Magnetic Resonance Electrical Impedance Tomography(MREIT), Electrical Properties Tomography(EPT) and Quantitative Susceptibility Mapping (QSM). The contrast information from these novel imaging modalities is unique since there is currently no other method to reconstruct high-resolution images of the electromagnetic tissue properties including electrical conductivity, permittivity, and magnetic susceptibility. These three imaging modalities are based on Maxwell`s equations and MRI data acquisition techniques. They are expanding MRI`s ability to provide new contrast information on tissue structures and functions. Prerequisites: Vector calculus, Linear algebra, Differential equation, Numerical analysis
CSE7820 Programming for Image Processing/Analysis and Visualization [영상처리 프로그래밍]
Image processing has become one of the most important components in medical imaging modalities such as MRI, CT, ultrasound and other functional imaging modalities. Image processing techniques such as image restoration and sparse sensing are being used to deal with various imperfections in data acquisition processes of the imaging modalities. Image segmentation, referred to the process of partitioning an image into multiple segments, has numerous applications including tumor detection, quantification of tissue volume, computerguided surgery, study of anatomical structure and so on. In this lecture, we begin with mathematical theories on PDE-based image restoration, sparse sensing, level set methods. We apply their theories to MRI, CT, QSM, and other medical imaging area.
