History
The Yonsei University Institute of State Governance Studies was founded on September 1, 2003 as the first state governance policy research center in South Korea. It has since expanded its fields of focus from governance to politics, public administration, sociology, economics, history, philosophy and more.
“What is the role of a government after democratization?” is the fundamental question examined by our institute. Based on this query, we have been broadening our research horizons and participating in projects related to the social sciences. In 2008, we were named as a ‘Key Research Institute’ (KRI) by the National Research Foundation of Korea and awarded a ten-year research grant. This has led us to become the university’s largest social science research center.
To this day, our researchers are conceptualizing insightful solutions to societal issues through active discussions. We plan to further enhance the qualitative and quantitative knowledge possessed by our researchers possess so that our research results may continue to be applied in governmental policies and educational systems.
Mission
The Institute for State Governance was founded to promote the progress of the nation through social science research, policy development, and education.
Researchers with different academic backgrounds have been conducting convergent research to propose a new vision for major societal issues. Our research institute has fulfilled this mission by providing high-quality research and educational services on and off of the school campus. As a result, we now represent Yonsei University’s leading humanities and social science policy research center.
We will maintain our efforts to contribute to the good of society through continuous academic research.
Vision
Creative
The Institute of State Governance Studies creatively generates research questions and applies them to develop analytical models. For example, we devised the unique notion of ‘state governance’. We aim to generate new standards that can capture ever-changing social phenomena. In order to enhance our originality, we are constantly conducting convergent interdisciplinary research.
Knowledge
The Institute of State Governance Studies generates knowledge about the past, present, and future of our society to offer guidance on how the country can best be governed. Our main objective is to organize and refine this type of knowledge and apply it to the creation of policies that can be applied in today’s environment of fast-paced change.
State
The various humanities- and social science-related topics in which we take an interest are directly connected to the challenges faced by modern society. Thus, the research conducted here is not only academically relevant, but practical in the sense that new perspectives on different policies are brought to light. This means our institute serves as a think-tank that pursues national and societal progress through the formation and proposal of policies.
Governance
The Institute of State Governance Studies executes multidisciplinary social science research related to governance. We specialize in presidential- and national-level leadership. Through this process we hope to collect intellectual property associated with governance and contribute to social science studies.
